Morgan Wallen Responds to Former Managers and Exposes the ‘Dark Side of the Music Business’ with ‘Spin You Around’ Re-Recording

Wallen initially dropped the song as part of the 2015 ‘Stand Alone’ EP, which was released under Panacea Records.

Morgan Wallen has responded to his former managers’ release of previously unreleased material from 2015 with a new recording of the track titled “Spin You Around (1/24).” The original version was part of his 2015 ‘Stand Alone’ EP under Panacea Records.

In a statement posted on social media, Wallen informed fans that individuals he parted ways with almost 10 years ago released an extended version of the EP without his consent, and it now appears under his name on streaming platforms. Wallen explained that in 2014, he ventured to Florida to explore original music and songwriting for the first time, resulting in a recording deal with a local investor and an artist management deal that he deeply regrets. He signed both deals without legal representation, leading to the creation of 13 songs, some of which he described as okay, while most were less than stellar as he was still learning how to write and navigate the music industry.

Morgan Wallen added that many of the songs recorded during that time “were not my idea nor to my standards.” He explained that his former partners had a 10th-anniversary edition of the EP planned, including eight unreleased tracks, and were distributing it with the assistance of his former managers.

Expressing his frustration, Wallen mentioned, “For months I’ve been exploring every avenue possible to acquire the rights to this old music & keep the quality of my catalog consistent with songs I choose to release & believe in. It’s gross, greedy & an example of how the dark side of the music business can suck the soul out of artists.”

He clarified to fans that this is not his new music, expressing concern that they might mistakenly believe it to be a recent release. Wallen shared, “I cringe when I listen to these songs & I’m concerned my fans may mistakenly believe this is a new release by me.”

Despite the situation, Wallen assured his fans that he is looking forward to recording his next project at the end of February, feeling creatively inspired and excited to produce music he is proud of.

The “Stand Alone (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition),” attributed to Wallen on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, was officially released on Friday through Panacea Records and “under exclusive license to Hard Working Recordings, LLC.”

As of Friday, Panacea Records had not responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment. However, William Ray, the label head of Panacea Records, told Variety that he stands by the release. He expressed excitement about sharing the songs with the world, stating, “We love the songs and believe some of his fans will love it too. We are excited to finally get these songs out to the world.”

In response to the unauthorized release of his old music, Wallen took matters into his own hands by releasing the re-recorded track on Friday. He also announced his plan to donate $100,000 from the Morgan Wallen Foundation to the Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) program.

Expressing his hope for aspiring musicians to maintain their creative freedoms, Wallen shared, “I hope young aspiring musicians read this story & know they should never have to give up their creative freedoms for an opportunity in this business.” He assured fans that when new music is ready, they will hear it directly from him.

While the re-recorded version of “Spin You Around” is Wallen’s first new solo song since his March 2023 LP “One Thing at a Time,” he has remained in the public eye. In December, he appeared in Drake’s music video for “You Broke My Heart,” providing advice to Drake after an apparent heartbreak. Additionally, Wallen had a crossover moment with Post Malone and HARDY at the 2023 CMA Awards in November, where they joined him on stage for a Joe Diffie tribute.
