Post Malone showed his admiration for the late Toby Keith during his performance at the American Rodeo in Dallas on Saturday.

The rapper/singer took a moment during his set to pay tribute to Keith, who passed away at the age of 62 in February, by performing a cover of Keith’s hit song “As Good as I Once Was.” As he sang, Malone poured beer out of a red Solo cup in honor of the country star.

In a heartfelt moment midway through his performance, Malone, clad in only cutoff denim shorts, played acoustic guitar and delivered a moving rendition of the 2005 hit. The song had previously peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot U.S. Country Songs chart. Malone shared a video of the performance on TikTok.

Just before launching into the final chorus, the 28-year-old Malone picked up a red Solo cup of beer from the stage. In a poignant tribute to Keith, he poured a bit onto the floor and then took a sip himself, referencing the late musician’s 2011 crossover hit, “Red Solo Cup.”

Keith’s passing was announced by his family in a statement shared to his Instagram in February. The post read, “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage.”

“Please respect the privacy of his family at this time,” the message concluded.

The “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” singer had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021.

Malone initially paid tribute to Keith shortly after his passing with an Instagram video featuring himself and country star ERNEST singing along to Keith’s 2002 hit “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).”

“AMERICA 🇺🇸 at 2am #RipTobyKeith,” wrote ERNEST, aged 32, alongside the clip at the time.

In recent times, Malone has been exploring the realm of country music. Brad Paisley recently disclosed that the two collaborated on a project, and Malone, known for hits like “Circles,” paid tribute to the late Joe Diffie at the 2023 CMA Awards alongside Morgan Wallen and HARDY.

During a June 2022 interview on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, Malone hinted at the possibility of recording a country album. “To be honest, there’s nothing stopping me from setting up in my studio in Utah and recording a country album to put on YouTube,” he remarked. “I’m allowed to do that, I’m a human being.”
